What skills/experience do I need?

Anyone, regardless of the stage you are at in your career, can be a mentor. It’s not about having a certain set of experiences or being at a specific level in an organisation. Being a good mentor is about having the right blend of soft skills and being able to apply them at the right time.

As a general overview, some suitable attributes are:

  • Committed to your mentee and investing the necessary time to assist their development
  • Having good interpersonal and listening skills
  • Respecting deadlines and meetings, rescheduling as required as far in advance as possible
  • Delivering constructive feedback in a positive and supportive way
  • Understanding the needs and aspirations of the mentee
  • Being capable of managing and driving the entire mentoring relationship using our digital platform

Time Commitment

For successful mentoring we ask initially that you meet regularly (minimum fortnightly) to build and maintain momentum.

The average duration of a mentoring relationship is 9 months. Mentoring is online, flexible and can take place during the week, evenings or weekends.

Initially, you and your mentee will focus on getting to know each other and building trust. After this it is about setting and achieving goals.

We hope that you will have gained valuable insights and enjoyed the experience. Moreover, you will hopefully have gained a lifelong friend! You will receive a programme completion certificate and we hope you will stay on and consider mentoring another young person. We may even ask you to become an ‘INSPIRE Ambassador’ to help us promote the programme as we continue to grow.
No. For quality mentoring and impact, INSPIRE mentoring is restricted to one mentee and one mentor at a time.
